Encounters in Space was the top selling? Thought it was Char's Counterattack. Then again, I remember reading such movie was overshadowed by Akira that year. SEED Freedom has it challenging though with the new Demon Slayer movie too.

Such comparisons are interesting in terms of trivia, yet it's such a different market and target audience by now. I'd like to think that if they re-made the original Mobile Suit Gundam storyline into a trilogy with completely new animation that would do better than SEED Freedom, but this might simply be wishful thinking.

CCA was never the top Gundam movie in terms of box office. Also, CCA came out in March 1988 & Akira came much later in July 1988. Akira has nothing to do with CCA underperforming. If anything, it's the nature of CCA itself that made people didn't want to repeat-watch it in theaters back then.
CCA: 1.16 Billion Yen Hathaway: 2.2 Billion Yen To put things into perspective, let's compare it with Shounen top-earners:

It does say something about that different market and audience though. Encounters in Space was on top for a long time, beating out any of the other compilations, CCA, F91, but perhaps more notably the recent UC movies--Narrative, Hathaway, Doan--which cover a pretty decent gamut of continuation, new trilogy, and side story. Neither continuing the UC story nor UC nostalgia bait could top the franchise in its youthful prime, but now SEED has done it. |

not bad for a 20-year old supposedly "dead" anime reclaiming the top spot of the weekend box office from the likes of Demon Slayer huh. according to Oricon: 1 - Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Freedom 2 - Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space 3 - Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway's Flash 4 - Mobile Suit Gundam 1981 5 - Mobile Suit Gundam II: Soldiers of Sorrow how about that, the only AU in the upper echelon and taking top dog status too haha. |

They really did it indeed this series began in 02 give watch dub in 04 yet now shown seed era is something.
Indeed this is the era & yet now really forward movie along bring back originals dub cast. Really this is time of GS era. |

It's incredible that Encounters in Space held the title as the most successful Gundam film for over 40 years, but I'm not surprised that SEED Freedom has surpassed it. For once, SEED was one of the most popular anime in general in the early 2000s and it's obvious that many people in Japan are very nostalgic about it. I also think that in recent years the anime movie market has increased in popularity in Japan itself, especially with films like Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, One Piece Film: Red, The First Slam Dunk, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, etc.
Wasn't The Witch from Mercury one of the most popular anime from 2022 and 2023? I mean, it wasn't a SEED-level success, but it was among the most talked about anime and Bandai confirmed that its Gunpla sales were among the strongest the brand has seen in years, despite the fact that Bandai had doubts about a female lead Gundam series and that the series it was shorter than previous ones. |

Congrats to Gundam SEED FREEDOM, for being the all-time grossing Gundam movie, surpassing Encounters In Space. Given how long of a wait for this highly-anticipated movie, is it any wonder this would happen?

Adjusting for inflation, FREEDOM still has a bit more to go. 3.1 billion is where Encounters would be. They'll hit that and more with international releases if they ever get that far.

Gundam's sales and profits have been on an uphill increase ever since the pandemic. Whether it's specifically due to one specific show or not is probably irrelevant. SEED was definitely a huge hit when it came out though and one of the top selling anime of all time. Not surprising the movie is doing great either. |

Witch From Mercury is quite specifically relevant, and its influence on the Gundam franchise goes beyond the pandemic, according to the staff. Bandai Namco Filmworks executive producer Naohiro Ogata said that Witch From Mercury was Gundam's biggest wave since SEED, two decades ago. He specifically cited that it brought in new fans who had not seen Gundam before, about half of whom are young.
